Two minutes and 12 seconds is all it took for “The Chosen One”, Tyron Woodley, to claim the name of welterweight champion on Saturday night at Philips Arena in Atlanta, GA. Woodley destroyed Robbie Lawler’s title reign and five fight winning streak early in the 1st Round with a series of punches to the jaw against the fence. This is Woodley’s 7th career win in the 1st Round, improving his overall record to 16-3.
“I’m not really surprised I won the fight,” said Woodley in an interview with Ariel Helwani, “I never came here to lose.”
Woodley attributes his success in life and the octagon to his desire to provide a better life for his family.
The Missouri native tells The Guardian, “Growing up in Ferguson, a lot of people said I wasn’t going to be anything. I’ve proven them wrong.”
